The following instructions apply to people who are actively using Fallon or Pioneer accounts managed by SCS (e.g. unr.nevada.edu, scsr.nevada.edu, unlv.nevada.edu, tmcc.nevada.edu, gbcnv.edu, wnc.nevada.edu, scsv.nevada.edu, plus nevada.edu or scs.unr.edu).
Your own campus may have more specific or alternate instructions for configuration – especially if you have an account, dial up, or machine managed by that campus.
When you connect to the Internet from a Campus Lab, the computer you are using is already configured for Internet access. (You may want to check our Email Techniques page for tips on accessing your Email from a lab computer.)
If you're using your own computer or an office computer, you'll need to configure some software with some or all of the following pieces of information (make a note of each):
Where you enter these pieces of information in your computer depends upon whether you have text-only access to the Internet or a PPP account allowing you to use a browser and Email program on your own computer. In the case of PPP access, it also depends upon the software you'll be using and your computer's operating system. Configure the following in the order listed, as appropriate to your situation:
If you need to update your Netscape or Microsoft Browser Software, the latest versions are available at the manufacturers' web sites. Installing newer versions over older versions should preserve your original configuration settings.
Your Internet account password is like a PIN number at your bank. It protects your identity. Moreover, it protects the security of the server you're using. Server security helps insure that the server continues to work reliably and that your own files are protected from damage.
You may change your password whenever you like (once you've successfully connected to the Internet). Your choices of password will have to meet with system security standards. That is, it must not be a word in a dictionary or award associated with your name, address, or other personal information. One way to make a good password is to think of a memorable sentence and use the first letter of each word. You could also add a number or punctuation mark.
If you have PPP access, your password will be the same as your password for your Pioneer or Fallon account. If you change your Pioneer or Fallon password, your PPP password will automatically be updated.
