Internet / E-mail Accounts through SCS

NSHE Students

Students may obtain a text only Internet Account through SCS. This account enables you to:

  1. Use campus lab computers or your own computer in a campus dorm to access the Internet and send and receive e-mail. Because campus computers are hard-wired to the Internet you'll be able to use ordinary Internet software: graphical browsers, like Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer to surf the World Wide Web, and populare-mail programs, like Netscape Messenger or Outlook Express, for sending and receiving e-mail and perusing newsgroups.

  2. Use your own computer to dial into the Internet from off-campus and use text-only tools available on our servers to browse the Web and access e-mail and newsgroups. Student accounts do not afford you the ability to dial the Internet in PPP mode from off-campus. Your campus account does not give you the ability to use graphical browsers or e-mail programs on your own computer. If you want to access the Internet from off-campus in the ordinary (graphical) manner, you will need an account with a commercial ISP (Internet Service Provider) in your area. If your computer is set up properly, a commercial account will allow you to use your Nevada university system e-mail address in addition to (or instead of) the e-mail address provided by the ISP.

You can create your own Internet student account on-line:

NSHE Faculty & Staff

Full-time and part-time faculty may obtain Web space from SCS to host their Web pages using the link below. Once your account is created, you can use Tel-net or FTP to access it.

Faculty and full-time staff of the NSHE may also obtain a PPP account through SCS. This account allows you to access the Internet using normal software tools on your own computer (a graphical browser and popular e-mail program) to access the Internet, whether your access is on campus or via a dial-up connection from off-campus.

Bulletin boards are a great tool for faculty members wishing to dispense information and promote discussion on the Internet. SCS provides an easy means for setting up your own Web Bulletin Board.

Nevada Teachers

If you are employed in a Nevada public school, you may be eligible for a text-only account (similar to accounts offered to NSHE Students, above) or to a PPP account (similar to accounts offered to NSHE Faculty and Staff, above) on the Nevada School Network system.  Eligibility depends upon policies in regional school districts and the Nevada Department of Education.  Please, consult with your district administration to learn procedures for obtaining an NSN account.
