Dialup Connection for PPP Users
Macintosh
Use the Internet Setup Assistant or comparable Macintosh tool to set up your Internet access, using settings provided above. If you need assistance, call a Support Center.
Windows 95/98
Create a New Connection
- Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, then on Dialup Networking (if you don't see Dialup Networking, install it as shown at right).
- Double click on the Make New Connection Icon.
- Enter SCS as the connection name and click the Next button.
- Enter the appropriate area code and telephone access number for your area Click Next.
- Click Finish.
- You should see an icon called SCS appear in your Dialup Networking window (you may have to scroll to see it). Right click on the SCS icon. Left click on Properties on the small menu that appears.
- Uncheck the box that says something like "Dial using area and country code" if you will be dialing from a local number.
- Click the Configure button, then the Options tab of the window that appears. Place a check mark next to Bring up Terminal Window after dialing. Click OK.
- Click the Server Types tab. Uncheck everything except "Enable software compression" and "TCP/IP."
- Click the TCP/IP settings button. Leave the top pair of choices set to "Server assigned IP address". Change the second pair of choices to "Specify Name Server Addresses". Enter the DNS numbers appropriate for your server. Leave everything else as is (no WINS servers, check marks in both boxes at bottom). Click OK.
- Click OK again to close the properties window.
- Right click on the SCS icon again and this time choose Create Shortcut from the menu. Click Yes on the dialog box that appears.
Installing DialUp Networking:
- Click on the Start button, then Settings, then double clickControl Panel. In Control Panel, double click on Add/Remove Programs.
- In the Add/Remove Programs window, click on the Windows Setup tab.
- If Communications is not already checked, check it. Click the Details button.
- In the Communications window, check Dial Up Networking if it is not already checked. Click OK.
- Click OK on the Add/Remove Programs window.
You may be prompted for your Windows 95/98 disks or CD. Follow onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
- Click the Start button, then Settings, then Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, double click Networks.
- If Dialup Adapter is not listed among installed components, click Add, then Adapter and Add again. Choose Microsoft from the list on the left, and Dialup Adapter from the list on the right. Click OK.
- If TCP/IP is not listed among installed components, click Add, then Protocol and Add again. Choose Microsoft from the list on the left and TCP/IP from the list on the right.
- Close open windows by clicking OK buttons (if available) or X (if not). Reboot your computer.
Check Your Connection
- Double click the SCS Shortcut on your desktop.
- Click the Connect button.
- Enter your login name assigned you exactly (just the part of your Email address before the @ sign) and press the Enter key. (If you are not prompted for a login name, repeat steps 6-8 above.) Then enter your password carefully, being sure that your caps lock key is off. (The cursor will not move while you type your password.) Press the Enter key.
- Click the Connect button.
- You should hear your modem dial, then squealing, Then you should see a message like "verifying user name and password."
- If you see a little box saying you are connected, click the X at its upper right corner to close it.
- You should see a tiny icon next to your clock at the lower right of your taskbar -- it looks like two tiny interconnected computers or a black box with lights. This means you're connected and your computer is using your phone line. If this doesn't occur check the trouble shooting guide below.
- Double click on the small icon next to your clock. Then click the Disconnect button. This ends your connection and hangs up the phone.

Setup Autodial
To have your computer dial automatically when you open Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer:
- Click the Start button, then Settings, then Control Panel.
- Double click the Internet or Internet Properties icon.
- Click the Connections tab.
- Specify that you connect using a modem or phone line.
- Select SCS as your preferred dialup connection (in some versions of Windows, the selection is made via a Settings button).
- Click OK to close open windows.
