E-mail and UNIX Service Transition

E-mail and UNIX service transition

Historically, SCS maintained centralized support of NSHE E-mail and UNIX Services. Those services are transitioning to campus control.

Q. How long will SCS continue to generate SWAMI IDs?
A. SCS will continue to generate SWAMI IDs as long as the institutions request them. Institutions will follow the same process used today.
(Reason: The SWAMI ID is used for many different things throughout NSHE institutions. Until this use is discontinued, the service to generate a SWAMI ID will continue to be available.)
Q. Will email from the SCS email system be forwarded and for how long?
A. SCS email services for students will be discontinued on 6-30-2010 and email will not be forwarded. Any mail that is received will be bounced back to the sender for 30 days and after that will be discarded. For active employees (faculty and staff) with a ‘forward-to” email entry in SWAMI, SCS will continue to forward mail until 6-30-2011. Employees must set their forwards before 6-30-2010. SCS will forward emails to institution addresses only.
(Reason: SCS will no longer forward student email, once email is retired. As a courtesy to employees who may use their email ID for professional contacts beyond the NSHE System, SCS will forward mail for Active employees whose SWAMI record contains a ‘forward to’ email entry.)
Q. How will user mailboxes in the SCS email system be migrated?
A. It is each user’s responsibility to migrate any mail from their SCS email account to their new mail system. Mailboxes will be available to users until email is retired on 6-30-2010.
(Reason: SCS is not in a position to determine which mailbox items may be needed in a user’s new mail system. This is best done by the user. If an institution decides to offer mailbox migration services to their students or faculty, SCS will work with their help desk or other IT personnel as appropriate.)
Q. Will personal storage allocations and personal web pages be discontinued?
A. At the request of the institution, SCS will reallocate 250MB of user storage to any active employee using an SCS account for file storage or a web site. The campus must identify by name, the active employee whose personal storage they would like SCS to reallocate. Personal storage for students will not be continued.
(Reason: If a campus cannot currently offer an employee personal storage elsewhere, then SCS will support the employee by re-allocating 250MB of personal storage for websites and other files which they may require for their work.)
Q. Will SCS still support mailing lists and the LISTSERV processing in place today?
A. Mailing list processing and LISTSERV software will no longer be available through SCS. It will be the responsibility of each institution to select the list management software or service to offer their users. Mailing lists and LISTSERV support will end when email is retired on 6-30-2010.
(Reason: SCS has provided all institutions a list of existing LISTSERVs and their member names. This will assist them in working with their users who require support for a new solution.)
